New Research on Conflict in Africa

The CCAPS program released two research briefs focused on conflict in Africa: "Elections and Social Conflict in Africa" by Idean Salehyan and "Climate Change, Global Food Markets, and Urban Unrest" by Cullen Hendrix. The Armed Conflict Location and Event Dataset (ACLED), a partner of CCAPS, also published its January 2013 Conflict Trends Report that provides an overview of political conflict across Africa in 2012.

Climate Change and Conflict: Is There Any Correlation?

CCAPS research on the effect of rainfall variability on conflict is highlighted in the Conservation Blog's article, Climate Change and Conflict: Is There Any Correlation? The article discusses the finding by CCAPS researchers Cullen Hendrix and Idean Salehyan that extreme deviations in rainfall are associated positively with political conflict.

Assessing State Fragility from a Human Security Perspective

The Office of the Secretary of Defense's Strategic Multi-Layer Assessment (SMA) division recently released a white volume on National Security Challenges: Insights from Social, Neurobiological, and Complexity Sciences. The volume includes a chapter by CCAPS researcher Cullen Hendrix on the use of a human security perspective to measure state fragility. Dr. Hendrix, assistant professor at the College of William and Mary, co-directs the Social Conflict in Africa Database (SCAD) with CCAPS researcher Idean Salehyan.

New Geocoded Data Sheds Light on Social Conflict

The CCAPS program released the fully geo-coded Version 3.0 of the Social Conflict in Africa Database (SCAD) today, adding events through 2011 and geo-referencing the entire dataset to provide latitude and longitude coordinates for more than 7,900 conflict events. SCAD provides the first systematic tracking of a broader range of social and political unrest including strikes, riots, protests, communal conflict, and other social disturbances in Africa.

CCAPS Researchers Examine Climate Change and Conflict in JPR Special Issue

This month, the Journal of Peace Research released a special issue on climate change and conflict that features two articles on CCAPS research: Climate Change, Rainfall, and Social Conflict in Africa, by CCAPS researchers Cullen Hendrix and Idean Salehyan, and Come Rain or Shine: An Analysis of Climate and Conflict Variability in East Africa, by CCAPS researcher Clionadh Raleigh and co-author Dominic Kniveton.
