The Robert S. Strauss Center for International Security and Law at the University of Texas at Austin was pleased to welcome Senator Wendy Davis to SMU's Faculty Club on Monday, March 3rd. This was the first regional event for the Dallas/Fort Worth Chapter of the Next Generation Project Texas. Wendy Davis is the Texas State Senator for District 10, which serves a large portion of Tarrant County in North Texas.
Senator Davis spoke to Fellows and their guests about public education and redistricting in Texas. After her talk, she fielded questions from the audience and spent time speaking one-on-one with the Fellows. Senator Davis serves on the Senate Education committee and became widely known in Texas this year when she ended the regular legislative session with a filibuster of a bill that would have permanently cut public education by billions.
The event was co-hosted with the John Goodwin Tower Center for Political Studies at SMU's Dedman College. De'Edra Williams, Next Generation Project Texas Fellow, provided the introduction and opening remarks, and Dr. Jim Hollifield, Director of the Tower Center, closed the lunch by thanking Senator Davis and speaking briefly about the close relationship between the Tower and Strauss Centers.
