Alan Kuperman

Associate

Alan J. Kuperman is Associate Professor at the LBJ School of Public Affairs, University of Texas at Austin. He is author of one book, The Limits of Humanitarian Intervention: Genocide in Rwanda (Brookings, 2001), and co-editor of Gambling on Humanitarian Intervention: Moral Hazard, Rebellion and Civil War (Routledge, 2006).

His articles have appeared in journals and newspapers including Foreign Affairs, International Studies Quarterly, Global Governance, Political Science Quarterly, Security Studies, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal. He also has chapters in books including Bosnian Security After Dayton: New Perspectives (New York: Routledge, 2006), The Media and the Rwanda Genocide (London: Pluto Press, 2006) Clashing Views on Controversial Issues in American Foreign Policy (McGraw-Hill/Dushkin, 2005), Genocide Perspectives, Volume III (Brandl and Schlesinger, 2005), American Foreign Policy: Cases and Choices (Foreign Affairs Books, 2003), Yugoslavia Unraveled: Sovereignty, Self-Determination, Intervention (Lexington, 2003), Nuclear Power & the Spread of Nuclear Weapons (Brassey’s, 2002), and The New American Interventionism: Successes and Failures (Columbia University Press, 1999).

He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from MIT (2002) and has received fellowships from Harvard University, MIT, the University of Southern California, the U.S. Institute of Peace, the Brookings Institution, and the Institute for the Study of World Politics. Prior to his academic career, he worked as legislative director to Congressman Charles Schumer and legislative assistant to Speaker of the House Tom Foley.

Dr. Kuperman coordinates the Strauss Center's International Security Film Series, which screens new and forthcoming documentaries and feature films on topics of global concern.
