Strauss Center Wraps Up Year One of CCAPS Program

In its first year of operations, the Strauss Center's program on Climate Change and African Political Stability (CCAPS) has made great strides in exploring the complex relationship between the growing threat of climate change and the ability of African countries to manage emergencies, disasters and violent conflict. CCAPS is a five-year, Department of Defense-funded collaborative research program that aims to enrich the current body of scholarly literature, develop future generations of scholars and provide practical guidance to policymakers.

Research Assesses Political Vulnerability to Climate Change

Political Marginalization, Climate Change, and Conflict in African Sahel States by CCAPS researcher Clionadh Raleigh discusses the probability of increased communal conflict in African states due to the "˜"˜political vulnerability'' of groups to climate change. From an initial examination of communal conflicts in Sub-Saharan Africa, the risk of conflict depends largely on the size and political importance of ethnic groups.

Call for Papers on Environmental Security

The CCAPS program issued its first call for papers on environmental security, open exclusively to scholars from and based in Africa. The Call for Papers is co-sponsored by the Strauss Center, the Institute for Security Studies, and the Pew Center on Global Climate Change.

CCAPS Hosts Policy Forum in DC

On Wednesday, March 3, the Strauss Center co-sponsored a discussion forum on Climate Change and African Political Stability (CCAPS) with the Africa Center for Strategic Studies at National Defense University and Meridian International Center. The forum gave the Strauss Center's CCAPS research team an opportunity to present its research design and discuss what policymakers want to know about climate change in Africa. It also enabled the team to establish a community of interest around this issue with government officials, think tank representatives and other members of the Africa policy community.
