U.S. Surveillance Law and Policy with Glenn Gerstell, NSA General Counsel

On Thursday, September 14, 2017, the Strauss Center and the UT School of Law hosted the Honorable Glenn Gerstell, General Counsel of the National Security Agency, to discuss U.S. surveillance law and policy.

The General Counsel of the National Security Agency—Mr. Glenn Gerstell—came to UT-Austin to take part in a series of events at the Strauss Center.  First, he gamely joined as a guest on the wildly-popular “National Security Law Podcast” show, which features Strauss Center Director Bobby Chesney and Strauss Center Distinguished Scholar Professor Steve Vladeck in a weekly—and distinctly lively—review of the week’s leading national security law stories. The episode with Mr. Gerstell focused on the looming Congressional debate over whether to renew the “Section 702” surveillance authority, and provides an extremely-accessible introduction to the topic.

Next, after the taping, Mr. Gerstell made an appearance at the Law School’s ceremonial courtroom in order to give a public address about the NSA and the legal framework that regulates its work.  Finally, Mr. Gerstell made time to meet one-on-one with students interested in legal work in the Intelligence Community.  It was a busy and much-appreciated day.
