The Failed Turkish Coup and its Aftermath

September 15, 2016 |  17:00:00  |  CLA 1.302B

On September 15, 2016 the Strauss Center and UT’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies will co-host a panel discussion on the “Failed Turkish Coup and its Aftermath”. Panelists include Professor Jeremi Suri, Associate Professor Jason Brownlee, Kimberly Guiler, and Kubra Babaturk. The event is free and open to the public, and will be held in the College of Liberal Arts (CLA) building.

On the night of July 15-16, 2016, rogue factions within the Turkish Armed forces calling themselves the “Peace at Home Council” attempted an overthrow of several state institutions, including the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdoƒüan. By the early morning hours, the coup had been put down by an informal coalition of civilians, police, and military leaders. Since then, however, a massive government-led purge has resulted in mass arrests of anyone who has suspected links to the Gülen Movement, who are accused by Erdoƒüan’s government for leading the attempted coup. Nearly 50,000 government employees (including academics) have been fired from their jobs, and numerous media outlets have been shut down. What led to the coup attempt, and what is the way forward for Turkey after this state of emergency? How do experts address the attempted coup from U.S. national security interests in the region?

The event is organized and moderated by Samy Ayoub, Department of Middle Eastern Studies.
