The Political Resurgence of Latin American Militaries

The Political Resurgence of Latin American Militaries

On Thursday, April 16, 2020, the Strauss Center's "Central America/Mexico Policy Initiative" is pleased to host a panel discussion on "The Political Resurgence of Latin American Militaries." The past year has witnessed a series of dramatic episodes throughout Latin America in which militaries have played a visible, sometimes decisive role in responding to large-scale protests and reinforcing -- or ending, in the case of Bolivia -- the power of incumbent presidents. What is driving the recent return to prominence of the high command, and what does it indicate about democracy and civilian control of the military in the region? Please join us for a panel in which we will explore various dimensions of the generals' return to the political spotlight.

Lunch will be provided. More details forthcoming.
