Last December, the Strauss Center funded three MSI Policy Research Project students' visit to El Paso, Texas to participate in a tour of the U.S.-Mexico border led by Joint Task Force North (JTFN). These students had the opportunity to hear directly from Customs Border Patrol (CBP) leadership how CBP aims to foster commerce and enforce regulations on the flow of people and goods.

Strauss Center Mexico Security Initiative Fellow Stephanie Leutert recently joined Benjamin Wittes on a podcast for Lawfare's "Beyond the Border" series (sponsored by the Strauss Center) on the epidemic of violence plaguing Mexico and Central America. How bad is the violence in these countries? Why do the U.S. rarely consider violence in these countries to be relevant to national security? What is causing the crisis and the waves of migration it generates? What can be done to stop it?
