Distinguished Scholar Comments on China’s Tightening Approach in Hong Kong

Sheena Chestnut Greitens, Strauss Center Distinguished Scholar and Associate Professor of Public Affairs at the LBJ School, was recently quoted in a South China Morning Post article titled “China’s home security chief attends Hong Kong national security office opening.” In it, she discusses the new security and policing team that the Chinese Communist Party is setting up in Hong Kong, noting that the city is a place where the “Chinese Communist Party is particularly sensitive or prone to seeing foreign infiltration aimed at destabilizing the party.” Greitens predicts that the CCP will continue to put a high priority on establishing stability in Hong Kong in the months ahead, and notes that there are risks if the CCP sets parallel chains of command in its new policing structures. Read the full article here.
