Eisenman quoted on Chinese nationalism

Jul 15, 2016 |

Strauss Center Distinguished Scholar Joshua Eisenman was recently quoted by The Economist in the special report “East, west, home’s best,” on the state of Chinese nationalism.

According to the article, China has an increasingly nationalistic society, and its citizens believe that the rise of China must come at the expense of other nations. Chinese president Xi Jinping claims to be leading China through a “great rejuvenation”, while he and the Communist Party have fueled the narrative of needing to save China from a “century of humiliation” caused by Japan and the West. Dr. Eisenman emphasized the importance of Chinese nationalism in unifying the Chinese people under their current regime. According to him, “the Communist Party of China is no longer communist, so it had better be Chinese.”
