Oct 12, 2020 |

Sheena Chestnut Greitens, Associate Professor at the LBJ School and Strauss Center Distinguished Scholar, was quoted in a recent Financial Times piece titled “China’s great power play puts Asia on edge.” This article discusses the escalation of tensions in China’s southern in eastern regions, which raise “ fears of conflict sparked by miscalculation or even by design.” This article provides a 360 overview of the various arenas of conflict—Taiwan, the South China Sea, and India’s Himalayan border. Greitens commented specially on the foreign policy outlook of President Xi Jinping:

“China’s foreign policy is increasingly a reflection of the attempt to seek regime security… at home…The CCP treats things as serious threats that might have been tolerated before.”

Her comment addresses the domestic instability faced by President Xi, whose comprehensive approach to security policy can be viewed as an extension of his efforts to enhance his domestic grasp on power. Read the full article here.
