May 13, 2019 | CAMPI
Stephanie Leutert, Director of the Mexico Security Initiative, has been awarded the Mexico Center Award for Opinion Writing by the LLILAS Benson Mexico Center. The award recognizes five U.T. faculty members for publications relating to UT Mexico work.
Leutert’s winning piece, “Trump Has It Backward: Many Migrants Are Victims of Crime,” was published by the New York Times in September 2018. The article discusses the detrimental effects of increased migratory enforcement by the United States at the border; namely, Leutert demonstrates that “ramped-up” policy has driven migrants onto “more invisible, risky paths, and impunity in Mexico for criminal perpetrators has kept them on the streets.” Read the full article here.
