Graduate Research Assistant
Rebecca Adeline Johnston is a doctoral candidate in the Department of History, where she studies Soviet cultural policy in the post-Stalin era. Her dissertation is an institutional history of the Soviet Ministry of Culture. She is broadly interested in Soviet and Global Cold War history, contemporary Russia, and the field of public history. Rebecca has worked extensively as an editor and translator of Russian mass media and within the field of international human rights. Prior to entering the history program, she earned her Master’s degree from UT’s Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies. At the Strauss Center, she is project lead on the “Russia Papers Project,” an oral history project documenting the 1990s in the post-Soviet space. She is also a Graduate Fellow at the Clements Center for National Security. This year she will be traveling throughout Russia and Ukraine to conduct archival research for her dissertation as part of the ASEEES Cohen-Tucker Dissertation Research Fellowship Program.
