Strauss Center Distinguished Scholar Dr. Joshua Eisenman’s commentary piece “How Xi Jinping Undermines China’s Reforms” was published in the September 12, 2016 edition of the Wall Street Journal. Dr. Eisenman argues that the strict, conformist behavior of China’s president, Xi Jinping, stands in contrast with his stated goals for reform and further “opening” of China.

In Dr. Eisenman’s estimation, the continued progress of Chinese society has been stifled by astounding levels of corruption within the Chinese Communist Party, chilled investor enthusiasm, and an apparent drive to politicize, from the top down, the politics of reform and party consolidation. Resentment, confusion, and opposition within China, about and to President Xi’s methods, are unlikely to lead to further opening, or to broader reform.
