On Monday, September 27, the Strauss Center hosted Christina Morillo, cloud security assessment lead and author, for a virtual conversation on “Cybersecurity is Only Partly Cloudy.” Wendy Nather, Senior Cybersecurity Fellow at the Strauss Center, moderated this second episode of the Strauss Center’s new speaker series titled “Tales from the Cybersecurity Front,” aimed at sharing stories from the cyber world. Nather began the talk by asking Morillo to share the path that led her to her current role at Trimarc Security. Morillo’s extensive background in enterprise security deployments and migrations to the cloud includes Microsoft, Morgan Stanley, and Fitch Ratings. Nather then asked Morillo to address some misconceptions related to cloud technology. Morillo discussed the importance of both providers and customers sharing responsibility in ensuring cloud security. Morillo also emphasized that customers should do their due diligence when evaluating the types of cloud services they want to purchase. Morillo indicated that the COVID-19 pandemic forced companies who went remote to move forward with the cloud.

Additionally, Morillo described some of the obstacles that new cloud clients have faced, such as cloud misconfiguration and ransomware attacks. During the Q&A session, Morillo fielded questions on a range of topics, including ransomware incidents, the government’s role in the cloud sector, and advice for anyone looking to enter the field. Morillo’s new book, 97 Things Every Information Security Professional Should Knowcan be ordered at the link above.

You can also listen to the talk on the War on the Rocks podcast, which is co-sponsored by the Strauss Center.
