Evolution of Constitutionalism in Poland

On Friday, November 3rd, the Polish Club at the University of Texas Austin in conjunction with the Strauss Center, the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies, the Center for European Studies, the Liberal Arts Honors Program, the Department of Government, Texas Global, and International Relations & Global Studies hosted Professor Hanna Suchocka, the first female Prime Minister of Poland, and current Constitutional Law Professor at Adam Mickiewicz University. She discussed the development of constitutionalism in Poland.

Biography

Hanna Suchocka was Prime Minister of Poland from 1992 to 1993. She was a key figure in development of the democratic opposition in Poland in the 1980s. During this time, she joined the pro-democratic trade union, Solidarity, and was then elected to Parliament. After leaving Parliament in 1984 to support Solidarity, she was reelected in 1989 as a member of the Democratic Union during Poland’s transition to democracy.

She was named Prime Minister of Poland in July 1992 by President Lech Walesa. She served as a member of the Polish Delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe from 1994-1997. In 1997 she became the Justice Minister. Later, in 2015, she served as First Vice-President of the Venice Commission.

She is the current Honorary President of the Venice Commission and a Professor of Constitutional Law at Adam Mickiewicz University.
