The Central America and Mexico Policy Initiative Director, Stephanie Leutert, assisted in data collection for an article in The Washington Post, “Border Drownings Rose as Migrants Rushed to Cross and Texas Clamped Down.” In the article, Leutert’s data was used to show the number of migrants who have drowned attempting to cross the US-Mexico border from 2017-2023. Leutert’s data was also used to show the increasing demographic changes in who is attempting to cross the border, with the number of women and children increasing in recent years.
