Robert D. Kaplan, a Strauss Center Distinguished Senior Lecturer, provided a review for the Wall Street Journal on “The Village on the Edge of the World.” The book centers around Herta Müller’s experience growing up in Romania under its repressive communist leader Nicolae Ceaușescu.
“A fact that cannot be emphasized enough is that World War II ended in 1945 only in Western Europe; in Eastern Europe it did not end until 1989. For Ms. Müller and her ethnic-German family, 1945 did not mark the end of fear but the intensification of it,” Kaplan said. “The ethnic Germans were doubly persecuted because they were seen as being on the losing side of the war; the Romanians, who had embraced fascism and sent Jews to death camps in Romanian-occupied Transnistria (some of the most hideous death camps in Europe), were hailed as antifascists because their country had switched sides.”
