Cordell Hull

Senior Fellow

Cordell Hull is a Senior Fellow in the Strauss Center’s Program on Technology, Security, and Global Affairs, where his work draws on a distinguished career at the intersection of national security, technology, law, and public policy.  He currently serves as Executive Vice President and Head of U.S. Public Affairs at Samsung, where he leads policy and government relations for the company in the U.S. and Canada.  Before Samsung, he led trade and economic security policy at Amazon Web Services.

Before returning to the private sector, Cordell served in senior roles with the U.S. government.  Most notably, he served as acting Under Secretary for Industry and Security at the Department of Commerce, where he led efforts to promote international trade while safeguarding critical U.S. technologies.  In that role, he played a prominent part in supply chain security, participated in the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, and administered national security tariffs.  He also served at Commerce as Deputy General Counsel and as acting Assistant Secretary for Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs.  Earlier in his public service career, Cordell served as General Counsel of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, where he was responsible for the legal components of the committee’s work across the Intelligence Community. 

Cordell began his career as an attorney in private practice, focusing on government investigations and litigation.

He received his law degree, with honors, from the Catholic University’s Columbus School of Law and his undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota.  He also serves as an adjunct professor at the Antonin Scalia Law School.
