Larry Temple

Larry Temple graduated from The University of Texas School of Law with honors in 1959.  After serving as a Law Clerk to US Supreme Court Justice Tom Clark (1959-1960), he was an Associate with the Austin law firm of Powell, Rauhut, McGinnis, Reavley & Lochridge from July 1960 to January 1963.  He was Legal Assistant and Executive Assistant (Chief of Staff)  to Texas Governor John Connally from January 1963 to October 1967.  He was Special Counsel to President Lyndon B. Johnson from October 1967 to January 1969.  He has been practicing law in Austin since January 1969.  He was a substitute instructor in Constitutional Law in 1962 and a visiting instructor in Legal Procedure in 1977 at The University of Texas Law School.

The focus of Mr. Temple’s law practice has been in the representation of banks, savings banks, trust companies, and other financial intermediaries primarily in matters before state and federal financial regulatory agencies. Mr. Temple served as General Counsel for the Texas Mortgage Bankers Association in addition to his other regular practice for more than 40 years until his retirement in 2010.

Mr. Temple served as a member of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board from 1983 to 1989 and as Chairman from 1983 to 1987.  He was Chairman of the Select Committee on Higher Education from 1985 to 1987. He was Chairman of the University of Texas Development Board from 1993 to 1995 and is still a member.

Mr. Temple received The University of Texas System Santa Rita Award (the System’s highest award) in 1988, The University of Texas  Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1990, The University of Texas School of Law Faculty Award in 1987, the Mirabeau B. Lamar Medal from the Association of Texas Colleges and Universities in 1990, the Humanitarian Award from the National Council of Christians and Jews in 1988, the UT Law School Outstanding Alumnus Award in 1999, The University of Texas Presidential Citation Award in 2001, the Texas Law Review Leon Green Award for outstanding contribution to the legal profession in 2003, the Austin Bar Association Distinguished Lawyer Award in 2003, and the Texas Bar Foundation Outstanding 50 Year Lawyer Award in 2011.  

Mr. Temple currently is Chairman of the Lyndon B. Johnson Foundation Board of Trustees.
