This February 2023 report provides an update to asylum processing along the U.S.-Mexico border by focusing on the CBP One appointment process, waiting asylum seekers, and migrant shelters. Overall, asylum seekers continue to face unstable living conditions and security risks in Mexican border cities. Many shelters are full, and along the border, a number of individuals are renting rooms, staying in hotels, or sleeping on the street. In Matamoros, another tent camp has sprung up with thousands of occupants living along the Rio Grande. Certain groups of asylum seekers also continue to experience additional challenges. Civil society organizations report that Black, LGBTQ+, and Indigenous asylum seekers have faced targeted discrimination while waiting in Mexican border cities.
