This spring, the Strauss Center was honored to welcome Dr. Roland Popp as a Distinguished Visiting Scholar. Popp is a a Senior Researcher at the Center for Security Studies (CSS) at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland.
While in residence, Popp engaged in archival research at the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library, with a particular focus on U.S. Grand Strategy in the Middle East during the 1960s and on U.S. nonproliferation strategy during the same time frame. After departing Austin, he traveled to the National Archives in College Park, MD, to continue his archival research there.
Popp is currently drafting articles based on the research undertaken during his stay in the U.S. The articles focus on U.S.-Iranian military relations during the Middle Cold War and on U.S. policy towards Israeli nuclearization before the 1967 Arab-Israeli War.
Roland Popp is an analyst on current Middle East affairs and the head of the Nuclear Weapons Policy Research Team at the CSS. He has published in Middle East Journal, Cold War History, and the International History Review, among other journals. His latest publication is a special issue (co-edited with Andreas Wenger) on the origins of the nuclear non-proliferation regime in the International History Review.
