Suri Reviews Book Detailing Henry Kissinger’s Role in Middle East Diplomacy

Jan 5, 2022 |

The New York Times recently published a review by Strauss Center Distinguished Scholar Professor Jeremi Suri of Martin Indyk’s new book titled Master of the Game: Henry Kissinger and the Art of Middle East Diplomacy. Indyk’s book chronicles Henry Kissinger’s attempts as President Nixon’s foreign policy surrogate to broker peace between Israel and its Arab neighbors. According to Suri, Indyk is in awe of Kissinger and places him in a class with Prince Metternich of Austria, who famously negotiated a century of peace among the European kingdoms at the dawn of the 19th century. Suri notes that the author captures the unique intensity of diplomacy in the Middle East, where Kissinger’s mediation removed the Soviet Union as a major influence from the region.
