“Shock Therapy”: Poland’s Transition from Communism to Capitalism

On Friday, September 1st, the Polish Club at the University of Texas Austin in conjunction with the Strauss Center, the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies, the Center for European Studies, the Liberal Arts Honors Program, the Department of Government, the Department of Economics, Texas Global, and International Relations & Global Studies is hosting Professor Leszek Balcerowicz, Poland’s former Minister of Finance and President of the National Bank. Poland’s economic transition from state-owned socialism to free-market capitalism was led by his famous “Balcerowicz Plan” reforms, also referred to as a shock therapy of the country’s economy.

When registering, there will be a section to submit questions for Leszek Balcerowicz. The moderator will select the 10 or so most interesting questions and ask them anonymously. Registration closes around 30-minutes before the event start time.

Biography

Leszek Balcerowicz is a Polish economist, politician, and Professor at the Warsaw School of Economics. He served as Poland’s Minister of Finance and led free-market reforms that transformed the country’s economy under its first non-communist government. He was President of the National Bank and served twice as Deputy Prime Minister. His Balcerowicz Plan aimed to balance the national budget through ending hyperinflation and restructuring inefficient sector’s of the nation’s economy. More recently, he founded the Civil Development Forum think-tank in 2007 and became chairman of the forum’s council.
