About the Program
The Strauss Center-Applied Research Laboratories Joint Studies Program is a multidisciplinary program that applies research in law, political science, engineering, and the natural sciences to problems in national security, defense, and public service.
ARL:UT
The Applied Research Laboratories (ARL:UT) focuses on the research and development of new technologies in order to support defense applications. ARL:UT supports a staff of scientists and engineers dedicated to applied technologies, provides research opportunities for students and post-doctoral fellows, and serves as a trusted advisor to the Federal government. ARL:UT’s research portfolio includes active and passive sonar development and performance modeling, autonomous vehicles, remote sensing, GNSS performance modeling, Geographic Information System advancements, quantum information sciences, gas dynamics in sub-, super- and hyper-sonic flow regimes, cybersecurity, information assurance, and artificial intelligence/machine learning.
Hands on research opportunities
To advance the Strauss Center and ARL:UT’s mission in public service, the Joint Studies Program provides hands-on research opportunities, fellowships, and mentorship for undergraduate and graduate students. We support collaborations between researchers, building bridges between law, policy, engineering, and the natural sciences. Finally, we serve as a repository of knowledge focused on strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and risks presented by emerging technologies in order to guide their applications.
