Gavin Explains How Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine Creates a Great-Power Opportunity for the U.S.

Jun 23, 2022 |

Frank Gavin, a Strauss Center Distinguished Scholar, recently published an article in Foreign Affairs. In his essay “With Great-Power Crisis Comes Great-Power Opportunity,” Gavin argues that the war in Ukraine presents an opening for a new phase of U.S.-Chinese relations. He notes that Russia’s war has starkly demonstrated that Washington’s standing in the world is stronger than previously assumed. Additionally, Gavin indicates that the fallout from Putin’s war in Ukraine is exposing Beijing’s vulnerabilities. Rather than pressing its advantages and risk escalation with Beijing, Gavin urges the Biden Administration to look for ways to accommodate China. He uses the history of great-power crises, including the Cuban missile crisis during Kennedy’s Administration, to explain why the United States should pursue a mutually beneficial accommodation with China in the aftermath of the war in Ukraine. You can read the full article here.
