Greitens Discusses Tension in the Taiwan Strait

Nov 4, 2021 |

In an interview with Bianna Golodryga from CNN, Strauss Center Distinguished Scholar Sheena Chestnut Greitens discussed recent tensions with China in the Taiwan Strait and the broader international context. Professor Greitens discussed how China has become more repressive at home and assertive abroad under Xi Jinping’s leadership. Greitens described the military implications of China’s decision to send warplanes over Taiwan’s air defense identification zone over the weekend. Greitens indicated that the U.S. commitment to Taiwan is codified in law through the Taiwan Relations Act, and that a concerted effort by the Biden Administration and the international community would be needed to respond to China’s increased assertiveness abroad. Watch the full interview here.
