ACLED-Asia Releases May 2015 Conflict Trends Report

The May 2015 issue of ACLED-Asia’s Conflict Trends Report focuses on political violence events in Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Nepal, Bangladesh, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. The report notes an overall downward trend of politically violent events throughout the subcontinent and Southeast Asia, largely due to a decline in active politically violent events in Bangladesh. ACLED also incorporates reporting on non-violent protesting into its analysis, which constitutes the majority of reported events within South Asia.

Busby and Krishnan Present Findings of Current CEPSA Research

CEPSA researcher and LBJ School Associate Professor Joshua Busby along and CEPSA Graduate Research Assistant Nisha Krishnan recently presented at the International Studies Association annual convention earlier this year. The presentation focused on their findings related to widening the scope of attention in matters of climate change and security in Asia. Busby and Krishnan asserted that Asia has not received sufficient attention on climate vulnerability issues as other regions such as Africa. Position Opening: GIS and Data Student Technician

The Strauss Center is seeking a GIS and Data Student Technician to assist coordinating data and mapping used in modeling climate-related disaster vulnerability as part of the Center’s program on Complex Emergencies and Political Stability in Asia (CEPSA). The CEPSA program explores the confluence of insecurities that impact vulnerability to disasters and complex emergencies in Asia and assesses potential strategies for response. The program focuses on six countries in South Asia (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka) and five countries in Southeast Asia (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam).

Consultation Workshop on Complex Emergencies and Political Stability in Asia

The CEPSA program held a one-day consultation workshop on March 5, 2015. The workshop brought together 23 participants from the CEPSA team, other universities, and nongovernmental organizations to review research memos produced by the program’s six research teams and provide critique and feedback.
